The Tummy Tuck Procedure

The tummy tuck surgery is fairly simple. The existing skin is cut out and the remaining skin is stretched out over the area to be tightened. The procedure is complete when the skin is sewn back on.

  • First, a linear incision is made, extending from one hip bone to another along the bikini line.
  • Your abdominal skin and fat is then separated from the rest of your abdominal wall.
  • Muscles are toned and tightened by pulling them closer, then are stitched together into a new position.
  • Finally, the incision is closed with stitches and dressings are applied. A temporary tube (a catheter) is inserted to drain excess fluid from your abdomen.

Abdominoplasty surgery usually takes about two to five hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. A mini tummy tuck may take about one to two hours to complete. Tummy tuck recovery times vary based on the extent of the operation and the surgical techniques used. Patients typically stay in the hospital overnight and often for two or three days.

While you are still in the hospital, the catheter is usually removed on the first day. You may be uncomfortable and have sudden urges to urinate, or have difficulty emptying your bladder; this usually passes in 24 hours. You will be wear a compression garment (which should be changed after a week), which supports your abdomen and helps the healing process. You may also feel a sensation of skin pulling and tenderness in the affected areas. These are common side effects and usually disappear in a couple of weeks.
